Introducing the Memoir...

We are currently working on Caleb Carr. We read "The Alienist" and have already gone on to the sequel "Angel of Darkness." These are great books with many interesting and poignant threads throughout. We will discuss this briefly in our next time.

Last time we met I made a suggestion as we all were on our way out " Read Virginia Woolf..." I know you don't get it, and you don't like it! That is okay.

Adeline Virginia Woolf is a tough read. You don' have to like her, in fact you don't even have to read her. The only reason that I suggest Virginia Woolf is that in our next meeting we will be introducing the genre of "memoir." And Virginia Woolf is a founding member of the more modern rendition of this very difficult and wonderful genre. ( By the way, "memoir" is much more interesting and enthralling than VW)

There are others who make for a not-just-good-but-great read, but I want you to find them and we will talk about them at our next meeting!

Trying to get through Facebook!

This is like trying to read a text book on Theriogenology. I don't really know the proper way to go about all of this "Facebooking" so any suggestions that you want offer will be greatly appreciated.

Any all is well here with the Penciler's we are currently reading "The Alienist" by Caleb Carr and, for those of you who may be fast readers, his sequel "Angel of Darkness." These two books should defiantly be on your to read list!

So I will... it is true that Facebook is a community service and a place where everyone can interact together, this blog on the other hand is not as user friendly as i would have liked... Don't get me wrong it is great for keeping a blog or a journal but it really is not so much of a social site. So, we are moving! Come see the new place on Facebook!

We Did It!

On Tuesday, June 1, 2010 The Penciler's Society held their first meeting! We enjoyed the company of Paula, Joycelyn, Elizabeth, and Sandra... Thanks for coming you guys and thanks for making our first meeting a successful one.

We got to know each other a little bit and we really had a good time. They all came with ideas about books and what makes them a good read, we even learned about some authors that have been around for a while but none of us had really heard of before. speaking of which... The next book that we are reading and will be discussing at our next meeting will be "The Alienist" by Caleb Carr.

Mr. Carr has written many outstanding books and "The Alienist" is no exception. This is a historical novel set in turn-of-the-century (1890's) New York. You can read more about this book on the Featured Book page at the bottom.

Our next meeting is scheduled for 6:00 the evening of the 15th right at the Ozark-Dale County Public Library, I hope to see you all there.

Wow... My tardiness astounds even me!

I am truly sorry for my tardiness. There is no excuse on my part but lasiness,and then forgetfulness. I must do better! Regardless we go on...!

"The Penciler's Society" has found a real life home! Yes, on the first Tuesday of every month we will be meeting at the Ozark-Dale county Public Libray at 6:00 pm. The first meeting will be on June 1, 2010, that is this coming Tuesday evening. I hope to see all of you there.

As this is our first meeting come prepared to share a little about who you are and what you would like to see happen with the "Penciler's."

Things are coming together faster than I thought!

Here on the web, this site is where "The Penciler's Society" calls home. My start date will be May 15th 2010, I will be avalible for comments or e-mail and you or anyone you know is welcome to come and check things out. And then on the 1st of June we'll kick things off! This blog is where anyone may come, read and participate.

Here are the rules -

1. All comments will be moderated by me. They will posted for public veiwing every Monday afternoon.
2. Every Monday afternoon I will log in and write a new post.
3. Each month we will feature a book and local artist here in Ozark, AL.
4. Above all... some are here to learn, some are here to share our love of culture and art, some are here simply to see what is going on so please be respectful and make The Penciler's Society a fun place to be.

In the next week or so I will set up a brand new group for members only which will in most ways mirror this one, but will have some members only information!

Also, I'm set to have a meeting with the director of the Ozark - Dale County Public Library. We'll set up the schedual and everything we need to have bonafide meetings. Meets will start around June 1st. Stay tuned for developments!

The first book that we will be discussing is Sea Change: Alone across the Atlantic in a wooden boat by Peter Nichols. Check the "Featured Book...!" page in the links at the bottom, and you can get the book at Amazon.com or borrow it from your local library.

Start reading and come ready with your thoughts! We're set to be up and running May 15th, see you then!
